Wildcats Finish 10th in Hawkeye Intercollegiate

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Kansas State men's golf team turned in a final-round score of 11-over par 299 Sunday to finish 10th in the Hawkeye Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,239-yard Finkbine Golf Course. The Wildcats finished the 54-hole tournament at 31-over par 895.


Hank Simpson highlighted the day for the Wildcats as he notched a season-best round of even-par 72 over the final 18 holes. Simpson finished the tournament in a tie for 46th at 10-over par 226.

Matt Green led K-State throughout the event as he fired a 2-over par 74 Sunday to finish with a three-round total of 6-over par 222 and a 36th-place finish. Seth Smith was right behind Green in a tie for 38th place at 8-over par 224.

"Obviously this is not the result we would have liked, but the guys competed and that is all you can ask for," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I was happy for Hank today as he carded his best round of the year."

Freshman Trent Evans tallied a 7-over par 79 on Sunday to finish the tournament tied for 49th place at 12-over par 228. Connor Knabe was three strokes behind Evans at 15-over par 231.

"We have had some growing pains this year, but we just have to stay positive and keep striving to improve," Robbins said.

Iowa State took home the top team honor after firing a 17-under par 847, five strokes ahead of second-place Idaho. Wichita State's Louis Cohen Boyer took home the individual crown, carding a 16-under par 200 to finish seven strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.

The Wildcats will return to action next week as they head to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., for the Big 12 Championship, April 27-29.
