Wildcats Start Strong at Big 12

TRINITY, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team shot a 5-under par 283 in the second round Friday, helping the Wildcats surge to a fifth-place standing after two rounds of the 2010 Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club.

K-State finished the day with a two-round score of 573 (-3) following a 2-over par 290 in the morning round. Defending national champion Texas A&M and defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State were tied atop the leaderboard as both carded 11-under par 565 scores on the day. Texas stood in third place after finishing the first day with a combined score of 10-under par 566, while Texas Tech finished two strokes ahead of K-State in fourth place after firing a 5-under par 571.

"The morning round was pretty good and then in the second round the guys really got the hang of it," said head coach Tim Norris. "We had a really good afternoon and the guys are really excited about being in contention going into the next round. The wind came up a little bit in the afternoon but the hole locations stayed the same in the second round which was an advantage for the guys."

Chris Ward of Texas Tech was the individual leader after posting a 10-under par 134 on Friday.

Leading the Wildcats on the first day was senior Mitchell Gregson, who was tied for 10th place after firing a 2-over par 74 in the first round and coming back to record a 4-under par 68 in the second round.

Joe Ida, Curtis Yonke and Joe Kinney were all tied for 16th place after all posted even-par 144. Freshman Ben Juffer carded a 13-over 157 and was tied for 56th place. Ida carded his best round of the day during the afternoon round as he finished with a 3-under par 69. Kinney fired a 4-under par 68 in the first round and Yonke had his best round in the afternoon with a 2-under par 70.

"Joe Kinney played well for us today. Joe Ida poured in a good round and Curtis was very solid for us," said Norris.

The Wildcats will tee off Saturday in third-round action beginning at 9 a.m., while the Big 12 Championship will conclude with a final round on Sunday. Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
