Cats Finish Fifth at Big 12 Championship

TRINITY, Texas - Paced by four players in the top 25, the Kansas State men's golf team finished fifth at the Big 12 Championship with an 11-over par 1163 at the par 72 7,425 yard Whispering Pines Golf Club.

Oklahoma State earned its fourth straight Big 12 Championship with a 19-under par 1133 at the 72-hole event.  The Cowboys have now won eight Big 12 titles, the most of any team in the conference. Texas A&M finished in second place 6-under par 1146. Two strokes behind the Aggies in third place was Texas, who carded a four round total score of 4-under par 1148. Texas Tech finished fourth overall at even-par 1152.

"We did a good job coming in here," said head coach Tim Norris.  "We didn't play our best golf but we did an excellent job competing. I told the team that we would be running with the big dogs here at the Big 12 Championship. If you look at the rankings of the teams that finished ahead of us they all are in the top-15."

Texas Tech's Chris Ward became the first Red Raider to bring home the individual title. Ward carded a 2-over par in the final round to finish with a 9-under par 279.

Senior Joe Ida led the Wildcats with a 2-under par 70 in the final round and finished tied for seventh with a score of 288. Ida has now been the top K-State finisher in three of the four Big 12 Championships.

"Joe had a great round today," said Norris.  "He got into a little bit of trouble on the 18th hole but for the other 17 holes he played as good as anybody on the whole course. He hit the ball very solid and played the par-threes beautifully. He bogeyed the 15th hole which is probably the toughest 132-yard hole we will play all year. He played great golf all week.

Senior Mitchell Gregson and freshman Curtis Yonke tied for 15th place with a 3-over par 291.  Gregson carded a 4-over par 76 in the final round, while Yonke posted an even-par 72.

Senior Joe Kinney posted a final round 4-over par 76 and tied for 22nd place with a 6-over par 294. Freshman Ben Juffer finished in 59th place after carding an 8-over par 80 in the final round and finished with a 29-over par 317.

The Wildcats await selection to a NCAA Regional on May 10 to determine the rest of their season.
