Cats in Fifth Place after Third Round

TRINITY, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team carded an 8-over par 296 in the third round of the 2010 Big 12 Championship on Saturday and stand in fifth place at 5-over par 869 heading into Sunday's final round at Whispering Pines Golf Club.

Defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State is in first place after posting a 2-under par 286 in the third round and has a total score of 13-under par 851. Texas moved into second place after carding a 1-under par 287 on Saturday and has a combined score of 11-under par 853. Texas Tech used a 4-under par 284 in the third round to move into third place with a 9-under par 855. Defending national champion Texas A&M is in fourth place after carding a 4-over par 292 in the third round and is six strokes off the lead with a 7-under par 857 total.

"The course played a little tougher today," said head coach Tim Norris. "The finishing holes were pretty tough today, but the guys did a pretty good job. The guys are really close to getting over the hump and have battled all the way."

Chris Ward of Texas Tech carded an even par in Saturday's round and is leading all golfers with a total score of 11-under par 205.

For the second day in a row the Wildcats were led by senior Mitchell Gregson, who fired a 1-over par 73 in the third round and is tied for ninth place overall with a 1-under par 215.

"Mitch has played awfully well and still has his chances for a high finish," Norris said. "As he showed in (Friday's) round (4-under par 68) he is capable of putting together a low score."

Seniors Joe Ida and Joe Kinney carded identical scores of 2-over par 74 and are tied for 16th place at 2-over par 218. Curtis Yonke is tied for 19th place after finishing Saturday's round with a 3-over par 75 for a total of 3-over par 219.

Rounding out the Wildcats lineup is freshman Ben Juffer, who carded an 8-over par 80 and is in 57th place with a 21-over par 237.

The final round of the Big 12 Championship will begin at 8 a.m., Sunday, with golfers teeing off from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Live scoring will be provided by golfstat.com.
