HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team sits in 10th place after carding rounds of 296 and 306 Monday to open play in the 2011 Big 12 Championship. The Wildcats fought through rainy and windy conditions at Prairie Dunes Country Club en route to carding a 42-over par 602 through the first two rounds.

“The scores were high and we had some average shots that did not turn out too well but it is business as usual at a course this demanding,” said Wildcat head coach Tim Norris. “The morning round was decent and this afternoons round we had to count a high score which hurt us.”

Oklahoma State, ranked No. 1 nationally, sits atop the leaderboard after Monday’s action as it carded a 15-over par 575. The Cowboys shot a 3-over par 283 in Monday’s first round and a 12-over 292 in the second round.

Individually, Morgan Hoffmann and Kevin Tway of Oklahoma State are the leaders after Monday’s first two rounds as they both find themselves at 1-under par (139). Hoffmann shot a 70 in the first round and a 69 in the second while Tway shot a 4-under 66 in round one and a 73 in round two.

Freshman Thomas Birdsey led the way for the Cats as he carded a 6-over par 146 for the day. He shot a 73 in both the first and second rounds and is currently tied for 11th overall.

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup were freshman Jack Watson, sophomores Curtis Yonke and Ben Juffer and junior Kyle Smell.

Yonke carded a 7-over 147 after Monday’s first two rounds and sits in a tie for 18th overall, while Watson shot an 11 over 151. Juffer carded a 18-over par 158 and Smell a 24-over 164.

“We still have two rounds to go and if we can string two good team scores together we can come out of this with a respectable finish,” Norris added.

Third-round action of the 2011 Big 12 Championship is set to tee off from the No. 1 and No. 10 holes at 8 and 8:50 a.m., Tuesday morning. The Wildcats will tee off at 8:50 a.m.
