HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The K-State men’s golf team turned in its second best team performance in three rounds Tuesday as the Wildcats sit in a tie for 11th place following the first two days of action at the 2011 Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

The Wildcats have carded a 60-over par score of 900 after the first three rounds of play. During Tuesday’s third round the Wildcats shot an 18-over par 298, which was eight strokes better than their finish in the second round on Monday.

“We did not really make up any ground today but our guys did have solid play,” said Wildcat head coach Tim Norris. “We just had enough bad holes though with scores ranging from 74 to 76, and those are just not going to be good enough on a day with as much good play as we have seen.”

Oklahoma State, ranked No. 1 in the nation, remains atop the leaderboard after Tuesday’s third round as it carded a 10-under par 270. The Cowboys now sit at a 5-over par 845 for the tournament.

Morgan Hoffmann of Oklahoma State is the top overall individual for the championship as he carded a 2-under par 68 during Tuesday’s third round. Hoffmann now finds himself at 3-under par with a score of 207 and ahead of Cowboy teammate Kevin Tway, who sits in second place by three strokes.

Sophomore Curtis Yonke has led the way for the Cats as he carded a 4-over par 74 during Tuesday’s third round. Yonke has carded an 11-over par 221 for the tournament.

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup were freshman Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson, sophomore Ben Juffer and junior Kyle Smell.

Birdsey shot a 6-over 76 during Tuesday’s third round and has a 12-over par 222 for the tournament. Watson turned in a 4-over 74 on Tuesday and now has a 15-over par 225 for the tournament. Juffer also carded a 4-over par 74 on the day while Smell finished with a 6-over 76 on Tuesday. Juffer now has a 22-over par 232 while Smell has a 30-over par 240.

“We are looking to jump up a spot or two tomorrow,” said Norris. “All of these guys played well enough in stretches but we still needed to put at least one low round up of the three and we would be right in the thick of it.

“So far we have done nothing better than a 73 and that is just not going to do it at this competitive of an event. Hopefully the guys will step up tomorrow and finish it off with a little Wildcat pride,” Norris added.

The fourth and final round of the 2011 Big 12 Championship is set to tee off from the No. 1 and No. 10 holes at 8 and 8:50 a.m., Wednesday morning. The Wildcats will tee off at 8:50 for the 18-hole final round with Colorado and Iowa State.
