HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team finished in a tie for 11th place with Iowa State at the 2011 Big 12 Championships held at the par 70, 6,759 yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.

“It was quite a day today and it was pretty interesting as far as conditions from one day to another goes,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Score wise it was not a very good day for us, but they tried their hearts out and they battled all the way to the end.”

The Wildcats carded a 40-over par 320 during Wednesday’s final round of play to finish with a 100-over par 1220 (296-306-298-320).  K-State was unable to avoid high scores throughout the day, as the birdies were far outweighed by bogeys and doubles.

“It was just a tough day of play and you have to be on your game with confidence and I do not feel that we had either of those going into today,” said Norris. “I really praise these guys as a team for staying with it and not losing their composure”

Oklahoma State, ranked No. 1 in the nation, took home its eighth Big 12 Championship, including its fifth in a row, with a 19-over par 1139 (283-292-270-294) for the tournament.  During the final round, the Cowboys carded a 14-over par 294.

OSU’s Morgan Hoffmann earned the individual title with an even-par 280 (70-69-68-73). He registered a 3-over par 73 on the final day.

Sophomore Curtis Yonke was the top performer for the Wildcats, as he posted a 22-over par 302.  Yonke recorded scores of 73-74-74-81 to finish in a tie for 36th place.

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup were freshman Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson, sophomore Ben Juffer and junior Kyle Smell.

Birdsey carded a 23-over 303 to finish in a tie for the 39th place tournament after he shot an 11-over par 81 in the final round.  Juffer tallied a 6-over par 76 on Wednesday to finish in 48th place with a 28-over par 308 for the tournament.  Watson finished in the 53rd spot with a 31-over par 311, including a 16-over par 86 in the last round. Smell concluded play in 59th place with a 42-over par 322, which included a 12-over par 82 to wrap up the tournament.

“It is time to re-tool and re-evaluate where each of the guys are with their games as well as what they need to do this summer and get ready to go next fall,” Norris said. “Next season starts tonight or tomorrow morning.”

K-State will nearly return its entire team in 2011-2012, including all five participants in this years Big 12 Championships.
