Cats Conclude Season at Big 12 Championship

TULSA, Okla. -- The Kansas State men's golf team turned in its lowest round of the 2015 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday with a 16-over par 296 at the par-70, 7,151-yard Southern Hills Course. The Wildcats finished the 72-hole tournament in ninth place at 89-over par 1,209.

"This was a tough way to end the season, but I'm proud of the guys for the way they handled themselves," said head coach Grant Robbins, who concluded his first season at the helm of the program. "They gave it everything they had and never gave up, even through all of the adversity. Obviously our program has a long way to go to be competitive in this league, but I am excited and optimistic about the future."

Matt Green highlighted the event for the Wildcats as he fired a 16-over par 296 to tie for 20th. Green shot a 4-over par 74 in Wednesday's final round. Seth Smith ended his season on a high note with a 3-over par 73 in the final round to finish with a four-round total of 25-over par 305 and a tie for 36th place. Connor Knabe was right behind Smith in a tie for 41st place at 28-over par 308.

Freshman Trent Evans tallied an 8-over par 78 on Wednesday to finish the tournament in 42nd place at 31-over par 311. Hank Simpson was three strokes behind Evans at 34-over par 314 following a 4-over par 74 during the final round.

Texas held onto the top team honor after firing a 10-over par 1,130, 24 strokes ahead of second-place Texas Tech. The Longhorns had all five individuals finish in the top 20, including the top two spots in Scottie Scheffler and Gavin Hall. Scheffler finished the event at even-par 280, while Hall was at 2-over par 282.

"Matt and Seth have shown some good things this year and the others got some great experience that will only make them better," Robbins said. "With five new players coming in, we will have more depth and the competition for playing time will be much greater next season."

All five members of the K-State lineup at the 2015 Big 12 Championship return for the 2015-16 season. In addition to the five new players entering the program, the Wildcats will also regain the services of senior Kyle Weldon, who redshirted the 2014-15 season.
