ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – The Kansas State men’s golf team opened up the 2010-11 season Saturday, finishing the first two rounds at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in 14th place with a 37-over par 605.

K-State carded a first-round score of 305 to sit in 15th, but the Cats rebounded to shoot a 300 in round two to move up one spot on the leaderboard.

“This course is very penalizing. You have got to be very exact,” said head coach Tim Norris. “All of our players struggled a little bit. We had some double bogeys and worse. I think that was the main thing that might have gotten out of hand a little bit today. A bad shot here is really going to get punished, and a lot of good shots make par here.”

Sophomore Ben Juffer led the way for the Wildcats, ending the day in a tie for 10th place with a 4-over par 146. In the second round of play, Juffer carded the fifth-lowest score of the round as he shot an even-par 71.

Fellow sophomore Curtis Yonke tallied the second best score on the day, shooting a 7-over par 149, putting him in 30th place for the tournament.

Three freshmen got their first taste of collegiate golf as Jack Watson, Thomas Birdsey and Tyler Norris each began their K-State career. Watson finished the best of the group, carding back-to-back 77’s to put him into a tie for 59th at 12-over par. Birdsey finished the day in tie for 71st, tallying a 14-over par 156. Norris rounded out the K-State lineup with his 29-over par 171, putting him in 80th place for the tournament.

“Tomorrow I am confident that the guys can go out and get some experience and improve our position,” said Norris. “I did see some better results in the afternoon today. They are starting to get a little more comfortable with the course. I know we didn’t shave a lot of strokes off, but I think the course also played a little bit harder this afternoon with the wind.”

K-State will look to improve its position Sunday morning, with Penn State, Kentucky and Indiana all within 10 strokes of the Wildcats. Play will get underway at 8:30 am. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as they become available.
