ARLINGTON, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team sits in seventh place after the first day of competition at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational at the par 72, 7,289-yard Links at Waterchase on Monday.

The Wildcats carded an 8-over par 296 in the first round and followed that up with an 11-over par 299 in the second round. The 36-hole total of 19-over par 595 puts the team six strokes shy of fifth place with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.

Freshman Kyle Weldon made his debut on the five-man scoring roster one to remember by firing a 3-under par 69 in the first round of play. Weldon's excellent score made him one of eight players under par and gave him sole possession of first place after the first 18 holes. He followed with a 2-over par 74 in his second round, putting him in fifth place after the first day of competition.

Curtis Yonke put together a consistent performance by shooting back-to-back rounds of 2-over 74 to tie for 24th after the first two rounds. Kyle Smell recorded a 3-over par 75 in each of his two rounds, placing him in a tie for 36th.

"We just need to continue and fight for every stroke," said head coach Tim Norris. "The Bermuda greens are a transition for us, but overall, I thought we did a pretty nice job. I know we could have done a little bit better, and I know the team feels the same way. However, I think we are doing a very good job of managing the golf course even though it is our first time here."

Ben Juffer struggled in his first round, but bettered his second-round score by four strokes to record a 36-hole score of 12-over par 156. Chase Chamberlin rounded out the scoring lineup with rounds of 6-over 78 and 9-over 81 to put him in a tie for 82nd.

Host school UT-Arlington led the tournament after the first round of play, but Wichita State stormed back with a 12-under par 276 in the second round to overtake the lead. The Shockers enter Tuesday's final round with a four-stroke advantage over second-place Sam Houston State at 6-under par 570.

Wichita State golfer Rafael Becker used an impressive 8-under par 64 in his second round to take the individual scoring lead over Sam Houston State's Scott Kelly by two strokes.

K-State will attempt to improve its position in the third and final round of the UTA/Waterchase Invitational, scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m., Tuesday morning. Scores will be posted on www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play.
