Hard to BEE-lieve

ARLINGTON, Texas - If this story weren't true it would be hard to bee-lieve.

A swarm of bees - more than 7,000 of them - near the 18th green that stung at least a dozen competitors resulted in the final round of the UTA/Waterchase Invitational being canceled on Tuesday.

The third and final round of the invitational on the par 72, 7,289-yard Links at Waterchase began at 8:00 a.m. However, the Kansas State men's golf team was two hours into the final round when a tree limb holding a beehive fell to the ground. After a lengthy delay to summon a beekeeper and assess the situation, the continuing threat caused officials to cancel the final round and reduce the tournament to the 36 holes played on Monday.

"It was very unfortunate because each of our guys had played five or six holes and our top four scorers were around even par," said head coach Tim Norris. "This is my first experience of something like this happening, but I know our guys are excited to get back out on the course in a couple of weeks at our home tournament."

The Wildcats accumulated a 36-hole total of 19-over par 595 on Monday, giving them a seventh-place finish out of 19 schools.

Kyle Weldon's solid play on Monday earned the freshman fifth place in his debut in the scoring roster. The fifth-place finish marks the highest by a K-State golfer in the first two tournaments of the 2011 season.

Wichita State captured its second tournament victory in as many weeks with a 6-under par 36-hole score, topping Sam Houston State by four strokes.

Wichita State golfer Rafael Becker won the individual scoring title at 5-under par, edging Scott Kelly of Sam Houston State by two strokes.

Kansas State will host the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, October 3-4, at Colbert Hills Golf Club. The tournament is free to attend, and the public is encouraged to attend.
