Wildcats Struggle On Day One of St. Mary's Invite

SEASIDE, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team made an 18-stroke improvement from round one to round two of the 2013 St. Mary's Invitational at the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Course on Monday.

The Wildcats fired a 28-over 316 in the first round before bouncing back to record a second-round 10-over 298 and will enter the Tuesday's final round of action in a tie for 17th place.

"Our second round this afternoon was a little bit better," said head coach Tim Norris. "I think all of our guys were really optimistic coming into today that we could play a little better than this, but we have got to come out of the gate a little bit better tomorrow. I am hopeful that we can use what we learned today to our advantage."

Senior Daniel Wood made a nine-stroke improvement from round one to round two and enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for 41st place. Wood tallied a first-round 8-over 80 before turning in a 1-under 71 in the second round. Junior Kyle Weldon currently sits in a tie for 59th place as he notched a 9-over 153 over the first two rounds of play.

Seniors Alex Carney (T86th), David Klaudt (T90th) and Tyler Norris (T96th) rounded out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats.

The nation's No. 1 team, the California Golden Bears, currently sit atop the team leaderboard with an 18-stroke lead over host-school St. Mary's at 6-under 570. Cal golfer Michael Weaver and San Diego's Grant Forrest enter Tuesday's final round in a three-way tie for the individual lead at 4-under 140.
