SEASIDE, Calif. - After a slow start that saw the Kansas State men's golf team at the bottom of the leaderboard through two rounds of the 2013 St. Mary's Invitational, the Wildcats were able to regroup and put together a solid collective effort at the par-72, 7,104-yard Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Course on Tuesday to finish in 13th place.

Led by senior Daniel Wood, who tied for 10th place, K-State turned in the second-lowest third-round score of the day - a 2-over 290 - to finish at 40-over 904. K-State was able to improve 36 strokes from round one to round three, the biggest improvement of any team in the event.

"We are capable of playing really good golf as evidenced by today," said head coach Tim Norris. "But to compete for championships, you have to be consistent and string together three good rounds and that will be the task at hand moving forward. But to finish like we did today was a boost of confidence and hopefully we can carry that over into some home-course advantage for next week."

Wood carded the third top-10 finish of his Wildcat career after firing a third-round 3-under 68, a 12-stroke improvement from his first-round score of 8-over 80. The Leander, Texas native ended the event with an overall score of 3-over 219.

Junior Kyle Weldon tied for 25th place as he recorded a 7-over 223, which included a 1-under 70 in Tuesday's final round. Weldon was able to improve eight shots from the second to third rounds.

Rounding out the scoring lineup for K-State were seniors Alex Carney, David Klaudt and Tyler Norris, who finished in tied for 70th, 80th and 102nd, respectively.

The nation's top team, California, cruised to the team title as they carded a 10-under 854 to best second-place finisher Oregon by 30 strokes. San Diego's Grant Forrest took home the individual crown after finishing at 7-under 209.

The Wildcats will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, as they host the 2013 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. After finishing last year's Colbert Intercollegiate atop the leaderboard, the Wildcats will look to defend their event title in the lone home tournament of the season. Admission is free to the public.
