K-State's Green Takes First at Jack Nicklaus Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kansas State sophomore men's golfer Matt Green went wire-to-wire to claim first place at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational with a three-round score of 3-under par 210 at the Ohio State University Golf Club - Scarlet Course on Monday.

Green's first place finish is the 30th individual victory in school history, the first since Ben Juffer at the 2012 Wyoming Cowboy Classic and the first under first-year head coach Grant Robbins.

"I am very excited and proud for Matt to get his first collegiate win," said Robbins. "He was rock solid all day and Coach (Cullen) Carstens did a great job helping him stay in the process."

Green recorded a career-low 54-hole score and was only one of two individuals to finish below par. Kent State's Chase Johnson finished two strokes back at 1-under par 212.

K-State's third-round team score of 288 was the second lowest round of any team in the final round on Monday, moving the Wildcats up two spots to finish ninth. The Wildcats finished the event at 38-over par 890.

"As a team, the guys did a great job bouncing back with a very solid round today," said Robbins. "This is definitely a day we can build on."

Trent Evans tied for 35th at 11-over par 224, while Seth Smith improved by 14 spots to tie for 40th at 13-over par 226. Hank Simpson carded a 23-over par 236 tying for 61st, while Connor Knabe placed 63rd.

Host school Ohio State finished atop the team competition by a large margin, carding a 7-over par 859 followed by Purdue at 19-over par 871.

"I'm looking forward to another great week of preparation," Robbins said. "We are eager to get back at it next week in Akron."

The Wildcats will return to the Buckeye State next week, October 6-7, in Akron, Ohio, for the Firestone Intercollegiate at the Firestone Country Club.
