MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team sits in first place after the first two rounds Monday of the 2012 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, with all five members of the Wildcat scoring lineup cracking the top-20 in the 10-team field at the par-72, 7,525-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.

K-State got off to a fast start in the opening round, firing a 13-over 301 to move seven shots ahead of Idaho, which finished the first round at 20-over 308. After battling windy conditions throughout the day, K-State carded a second-round score of 308 to stay atop the leaderboard after 36 holes of play at 609. The Cats lead the Vandals by three strokes heading into Tuesday's final round.

“The team battled today,” said head coach Tim Norris. “(Weather-wise) it was a tough day out here, but we usually have a lot of them, so our guys are kind of used to it -- just maybe not this early in the year, but that is just the way it goes.

“But I am proud of our guys for hanging in there,” continued Norris. “We have got to play a little bit tidier around the greens and eliminate the big numbers, and if we do that, I think we will end up in a good place.”

Junior Daniel Wood continued his solid play by notching a 4-over 148 in the first two rounds and goes into the final day of play leading the field by one stroke. The Leander, Texas, native is currently tied for the team lead in scoring average and is coming off a pair of top-25 finishes to start the season.

Senior Curtis Yonke carded a 1-under 71 in first-round action -– the only player under par in round one -- and followed up with a 6-over 78 in round two to finish Monday’s play with a 36-hole score of 149. Yonke is tied for second place with Missouri State’s Daily Young and Idaho’s Sean McMullen.

Fellow senior Ben Juffer carded a 77 and 75 in the first and second rounds, respectively, to enter the final day of play in sixth place. Juffer trails Dylan Baker of Idaho for fifth place by one stroke.

Competing as an individual, junior David Klaudt trails Juffer by one stroke, sitting in sole possession of seventh place. Klaudt recorded a 36-hole score of 9-over 153 and leads the nearest competitor by two strokes heading into the final day of play.

Final round action from Colbert Hills will begin Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Post-event recaps and results of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate will be available at at the conclusion of play on Tuesday.
