MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team capped off its home tournament by finishing in third at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,525-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.

The Wildcats recorded a 15-over par 303 in the final round on Tuesday. The 54-hole total of 30-over par 894 gave the team its second top-three finish of the season.

K-State was led by top-10 finishes from senior Kyle Smell and junior Chase Chamberlin. Smell climbed from 17th to ninth by carding a final round of even-par 72, and Chamberlin finished with a 6-over par 78 to earn a tie for 10th.

Kyle Weldon continued his strong freshman campaign by finishing in 13th place following a final round of 5-over par 77. Rounding out the scoring lineup were Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke, who finished in a tie for 14th and a tie for 16th, respectively.

“I told the guys this morning to play their hardest because that is all you can ask for,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I thought we had some good rounds, but we did not have four good rounds for each round to be able to compete for the trophy. It is a little disappointing, but we are right in the middle of our fall season, so there is no time to hang our heads. We have two tournaments in the next two weeks, and I think the big picture looks awfully good for us.

Competing as an individual, Alex Carney remained consistent and shot his third-consecutive 2-over par 74 to tie for sixth, the highest finish among all eight Wildcats. The walk-on earned his best career finish and first top 10 honor.
David Klaudt finished with a 54-hole score of 14-over par 230 to tie for 20th, while Tyler Norris recorded a 26-over par 242 to finish in 40th.

Idaho remained steady in the final round to earn a 12-stroke victory over runner-up Boise State. Bronco golfer Taeksoo Kim completed another subpar round to win the individual titles at 6-under par. Idaho’s Justin Kadin and Creighton’s Kevin Stanek finished six strokes behind Kim in a tie for second.

K-State will travel to Akron, Ohio, next week for the Firestone Invitational, Oct. 10-11, at Firestone Country Club.
