Cats Place Eighth at Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Kansas State men's golf team finished in eighth place with a 54-hole score of 24-over par 888 following the third round of 2014 Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats were led by sophomore Seth Smith, who tied for third after carding a season-best 1-under par 215.

"Seth had a good tournament," said head coach Grant Robbins. "I know he was disappointed not to close it out and get the win, but it was his first time to be in contention and I know he will learn from this experience and be better for it in the long run."

Smith began the final round in first place at 4-under par 140 but was unable to keep the lead as he carded a 3-over par 75 in the final round. Hank Simpson finished in a tie for 27th with a 6-over par 222, while Matt Green tied for 40th at 8-over par 224.

"As a team, we need to be more consistent," Robbins said. "We made too many big numbers this week, and we have to get better at limiting three putts. It is a long season. We just have to get back to work and continue to improve."

Rounding out the Wildcat scoring lineup was Trent Evans with a season-low 54-hole score of 14-over par 230 (T63rd) and Connor Knabe (T71st) at 17-over par 233.

Xavier's Jose Montano took home the individual title by scoring a 4-under par 212 - three strokes ahead of K-State's Smith - thanks to a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday. University of South Carolina-Aiken won the Firestone Invitational for the second year in a row with a 12-over par 876, one stroke ahead of Xavier.

K-State will close out the fall season at the 2014 Bill Ross Intercollegiate, October 13-14, at the Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kansas.
