AKRON, Ohio – The Kansas State men’s golf team sits in a four-way tie for eighth place after firing an 8-over 296 in the first round of the 2012 Firestone Invitational at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club. Originally slated for 36 holes, Monday’s action was shortened to 18 holes due to a heavy morning frost in Northeastern Ohio.

The Wildcats are currently tied with Maryland, Samford and St. Mary’s for eighth place and trail the seventh-place Louisville Cardinals by four strokes. Wildcat head coach Tim Norris was pleased with the effort that his team played with, especially towards the end of the Monday’s opening round.

“We started on some of the tougher holes of the golf course and with the event shorten to 36 holes, it was important that we got off to a good start this morning,” said Norris. “But the guys battled toward the end. We made a couple of birdies and all of the guys seemed to be striking the ball pretty well. Tomorrow we do not have the final round to make up ground, so we have got to sprint to the finish.”

Junior Daniel Wood, who finished second at last week’s Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, continued to lead the Wildcats as he recorded a 1-over par 73 to tie for 21st place after the first 18 holes of play. Wood opened the day by birding two of the first five holes and ended Monday’s play with a birdie on No. 17 to finish one shot behind a cluster of players who are currently tied for 16th place even-par 72.

Seniors Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke are currently in an 11-way tie for 30th place after firing a 2-over 74 on Monday. Juffer was able to battle back from a slow start on the back nine with a pair of back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16.

Junior David Klaudt and sophomore Kyle Weldon rounded out the scoring lineup for K-State as Klaudt currently sits in a tie for 58th place and Weldon is tied for 43rd after 18 holes of play. Klaudt shot 4-over 76 while Weldon recorded a 3-over 75 on Monday.

Tyler Markel of Ball State carded a 4-under 68 to tie with South Carolina-Aiken’s Matt Atkins for the individual top spot heading into Tuesday’s final round action. Ball State (282) sits atop the leaderboard, while South Carolina-Aiken (285) trails the Cardinals by three shots after the first 18 holes.

The final round of play will get underway at 8:30 a.m. (ET) from the Firestone Country Club on Tuesday. Live results of the Firestone Invitational will be available at Recaps will be available at at the conclusion of play on Tuesday.
