AKRON, Ohio - A day after getting off to a rather slow start, the Kansas State men's golf team reversed its course and came out firing in the final round to finish seventh at the Firestone Invitational at the par 72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club on Tuesday.

The Wildcats had three golfers finish under par en route to a final round 4-under par 284, an eight stroke improvement from their first and second round totals. The under-par team score was the third of the season for K-State and improved its position in the team standings from eighth to seventh at 4-over par 868.

"The 4-under par today was an awfully good round," said head coach Tim Norris. "We were only four shots away from fifth place, which is really good. I know all of our guys can think of a few shots they would like back that could have put us up to there. I saw some really solid golf this week, and I am really encouraged by the play of our guys. If we can build off of what we did this week, I think we will be in really good shape for next week's tournament."

Kyle Weldon's strong start in the final round helped him fire off a final round 2-under par 70 to improve his position in the individual standings by 11 spots. He tied for 11th to mark his fourth top-20 of the season in as many events.

Ben Juffer remained consistent by carding a final round 1-under par 71 to finish at even par for the tournament and in 21st place. Chase Chamberlin rebounded from Monday to shoot a 2-under par 70 in his final round to improve 21 spots to 59th place.

Kyle Smell tallied a 1-over par 73 to remain in a tie for 22nd, while Alex Carney shot a 7-over par 79 to finish in a tie for 77th.

St. Mary's (CA) rallied with a final round 7-under par 281 to claim a tie for the Firestone Invitational team honors with 34th-ranked Indiana. Gael golfer Mac McClung won the individual title with a 54-hole total of 11-under par 205, bettering Hooiser golfer Chase Wright by four strokes.

K-State will travel to Shreveport, La., next week for the David Toms Intercollegiate, Oct. 17-18, at Southern Trace Country Club.
