Ida Tied for Third at Firestone

AKRON, Ohio - Coming off the first individual title of his career at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, senior Joe Ida fired a 1-under par 143 during the first day of the Firestone Invitational on Monday helping Kansas State to a fifth-place tie with Akron and Rhode Island heading into Tuesday's final round.  The Wildcats carded an 8-over par 296 in the first round and started strong in the second round before falling off late to finish the day with a total score of 16-over par 592 at the par 72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club.

Ida carded a second-round 2-under par 70 to turn in the best round of any Wildcat in the first two rounds.

"Joe played really good," said head coach Tim Norris. "He made an eagle and this is the course where you can birdie every hole and turn around and bogie every hole out here, but Joe played really well today, which is really good to see."

Eastern Michigan is in first place after shooting an even-par 576 on the first day. St. Mary's is one stroke off the lead in second place with a 1-over par 577. In third place is Michigan State at 9-over par 585. The Spartans lead Kentucky by four strokes heading into the final round.

"Mitch (Gresgon) had a solid round as usual," said Norris. "If he gets a couple of putts to fall, he would have been able to move up a little bit. If we were able to turn in one more good score, we would be up there near the top. Tomorrow is a chance for us to move up because we have a couple of rounds under our belt at this golf course. I don't see the course playing any tougher tomorrow than it played today and with some familiarities we got today with the course hopefully we can shave a few shots a man off."

Gregson finished the day tied for seventh place after carding an even-par 145. Jason Schulte is in a tie for 37th place with a 7-over par 151.

Joe Kinney is tied for 49th place at 9-over par 153 heading into Tuesday's final round. Freshman Curtis Yonke carded a 16-over par 160 and is tied for 64th place.

The Wildcats look to rally back on Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m., (CT) start with golfers teeing off from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Live scoring will be provided by golfstat.com.
