K-State's Knabe Tied for First at Bill Ross Intercollegiate

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Kansas State sophomore men's golfer Connor Knabe shot a career-low round of 3-under par 69 to sit in a tie for first following the first round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at Milburn Country Club on Monday. The Wildcats sit in third place as a team, just one shot back of UMKC, as they carded a 15-over par 303.

"I'm really proud of Connor today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He's been struggling this year but has been working hard. It was great to see him have such a strong round in some very difficult conditions."

Due to rain, the tournament was delayed Monday morning until 10:20 a.m., and will consist of just two rounds with the final round beginning on Tuesday.

"I was disappointed that, as a team, we weren't able to take advantage of Connor's play," Robbins said. "We made a few mental errors and gave away some shots down the stretch. However, we are only eight shots back (of leader Wichita State), so we have a chance."

Knabe's round of 69 was one shot better than his previous career-low of 70 during last year's Pacific Invitational and Wyoming Desert Classic. He is tied with Wichita State's Louis Cohen Boyer entering Tuesday's final round.

K-State sophomore Hank Simpson, who is currently tied for 25th, shot a 5-over par 77, while Matt Green is tied for 35th at 6-over par 78. Seth Smith (T44th) and Trent Evans (T61st) contributed to the Wildcats scorecard. Redshirt freshman JP Derksen, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 67th.

"We just need everyone to grind it out and get the most out of their round tomorrow, and we will be in good shape," Robbins said.

The final round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., on Tuesday morning. Live stats can be followed on www.birdiefire.com, while final results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com following the conclusion of the event.
