BATON ROUGE, La. – The Kansas State men’s golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of the David Toms Intercollegiate in 12th, with freshmen Jack Watson tied for ninth individually, Monday afternoon at the par 72, 6,894-yard Country Club of Louisiana.

The Wildcats, who finished round one in a tie for 13th at 13-over par, had the third most improved score among all teams in round two, shooting an even-par 288 to gain a spot in the standings. Host LSU leads the tournament after firing off an impressive 17-under par 559 in day one.

“Our scores got a little bit better there in the afternoon round,” said head coach Tim Norris. “That was indicative of the fact that these guys have got a lot of pride. I think we are still just a few swings away from turning the corner, but we had some awfully nice rounds today.”
Watson, who took second in the Wildcats home meet in September, fired off back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to land him in a four way tie for ninth place. He sits just three shots back of tournament leaders Austin Gutgsell and Ken Looper, both of LSU, who finished day one at 7-under par 137.

“Jack is playing awfully solid right now,” added Norris. “He was making a lot of birdies out there today which is good to see. I am very excited for Jack and his chances tomorrow to have another solid round.”

Sophomore Chase Chamberlin ended round one in a tie for 64th after shooting an opening-round 6-over 78, but was able to claw his way back into a tie for 45th at 4-over par after carding a 2-under 70 in round two. Freshman Thomas Birdsey shot back-to-back rounds of 2-over 74 to find himself in a tie with Chamberlin at 4-over 148 heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Freshman David Klaudt struggled in round one, shooting 10-over par 82, but was able to improve eight strokes in the second round to bring him to a tie for 69th at 12-over. Sophomore Ben Juffer rounded out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats in a tie for 72nd after carding 7-over 79 in both of Monday’s rounds.

Round three of the David Toms Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the event can be followed at www.golfstat.com
