Cats Look to Bounce Back on Final Day of Wimberly Invite

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Kansas State men’s golf team sits in 10th place after recording a 16-over 584 during the first two rounds of competition in the Herb Wimberly Invitational at the par-71, 7,074-yard New Mexico State Golf Course on Monday.

“We finished round one in pretty decent shape, but I think everybody was guilty of pressing a little bit,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I do not think anybody is happy tonight, but the best thing to do is go out tomorrow and make amends for some of the mistakes that we made today and hopefully finish on a strong note.”

Pacing the Wildcats was senior co-captain Ben Juffer, who carded a 1-over 143 to finish the first day of action in a six-way tie for 17th place. Juffer fired a first-round 69, his lowest 18-hole score of the season.

Sophomore Kyle Weldon is currently in a tie for 34th place after recording a 4-over 146 to finish three shots ahead of junior Daniel Wood, who notched a 9-over 151 to sit in a tie for 50th place.

Rounding out the scoring lineup for K-State was senior Curtis Yonke and freshman Matt Green as both golfers recorded a 9-over 151 and are currently tied for 62nd place.

Competing as a individual, junior Alex Carney tallied an 11-over 153 to finish in 68th place after two rounds of play.

Wichita State enters the final day of competition atop the leaderboard as the Shockers fired a 3-under 565 to lead second-place UNLV by one stroke. Kansas golfer Chris Gilbert and UNLV’s Blake Biddle lead the individual portion of the event as both golfers notched a 6-under 136 on Monday.

The final round of the Herb Wimberly Invitational will get underway at 8:00 a.m. (MT) from the NMSU Golf Course on Tuesday. Results will be available at at the conclusion of play.
