Cats in Third Place at Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Kansas State men's golf team carded a 1-under par 283 in round one, but turned around to fire a 9-under par 275 in the second round to sit in third place after 36 holes of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday.

The Wildcats took advantage of great weather to card a 10-under par 558 at the par 71, 7,074-yard New Mexico State Golf Course.

"We are in the hunt for tomorrow," said head coach Tim Norris. "There is a lot of low scores because the weather is great and the course is very scoreable. You have to keep making birdies and we didn't make quite enough this morning to keep pace with UNLV, but the guys did a great job this afternoon hanging in there."

UNLV is the team leader at 17-under par 551. Washington State sits in second place with a 16-under par 552. In fourth place behind K-State is Nevada after carding a 6-under par 562. Host New Mexico State is in fifth place with a score of 4-under par 564.

K-State was led by senior Joe Ida, who carded consecutive scores of 3-under par 68 and is tied for fifth place at 6-under par 136.

"Joe Ida played another really solid round," said Norris. "He started this morning with a double bogey followed by another bogey but stuck with it this morning and put in another good round this afternoon."

Senior Mitchell Gregson is tied for 12th place after carding a 4-under par 138. Gregson started the day with a 1-over par 72 but rebounded in the second round to card his best score of the season with a 5-under par 66.

"Mitch was thoroughly disgusted with 72 this morning which can be a really good score. But for Mitch and the way he can play this golf course, 72 wasn't very good this morning. To his credit he really came back this afternoon to give us a spark," said Norris.

Jason Schulte is tied for 28th place at even par 142 heading into the final round, while senior Joe Kinney is tied for 33rd after carding a 1-over par 143.

Freshman Curtis Yonke fired a 3-over par 145 and is tied for 47th place.

The Wildcats will tee off Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. Final results for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate will be available at as soon as they are made available.
