STOCKTON, Calif. – The Kansas State men’s golf team closed out the fall portion of the 2012-13 season in dramatic fashion Wednesday as it won the 2012 SCVB Pacific Invitational on a final-hole birdie from sophomore Kyle Weldon at the 6,720-yard, par-72 Brookside Country Club.

The Wildcats, who entered the final round with a five-shot lead over BYU, carded an overall score of 47-under 817 to finish one stroke ahead of host school Pacific and Nevada, which tied for second place at 46-under 818.

Wednesday’s victory marks the first time the Wildcats have won two tournaments in the same season since the 2008-09 campaign. K-State also won the 2012 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate in early October, besting the second-place finisher Idaho by 13 strokes.

“I am sure proud of my guys today,” said head coach Tim Norris. “This was a total team effort that came down to the last couple of guys and they came through for us. Ben (Juffer) birdied No.17 and then Kyle (Weldon) hit it about 60 feet away for eagle on No.18. He knew exactly what he had to do and lagged it down there to a couple of feet with a great put and sealed the victory for us.

“Obviously, to finish the fall with a victory feels awfully good, but we have got our work cut out for us in the spring. With a little boost of confidence here, and if we can get these guys ready to go in the spring, we can really do some great stuff next spring as well.”

Weldon carded a final-round 69 on his way to an overall score of 10-under 206, the lowest 54-hole mark of his Wildcat career. Weldon tallied five birdies on the back nine to lead K-State to its second win of the year.

After recording the lowest 36-hole score of the season on Monday and Tuesday, Juffer fired a final-round 6-under 66 to finish at 11-under 205 to tie for 14th place. Juffer’s 11-under 205 is the second-lowest 54-hole score of his collegiate career and bests his previous low mark of the season by 10 strokes.

Junior Daniel Wood finished in a tie for 27th at 9-under 207, while freshman Matt Green tied for 28th place by shooting a 7-under 209. Rounding of the Wildcat scoring lineup was senior Curtis Yonke, who recorded a 4-under 212 and tied for 36th place.

K-State will be back in action this spring as the Wildcats will travel to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the 2013 UTSA Invitational, Feb. 11-12, at the par-71, 6,765-yard Oak Hill Country Club.
