STOCKTON, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team finished up the first round of play at the Pacific Invitational in 10th place Monday afternoon at the par 71, 6,608-yard Brookside Country Club.

The Wildcats carded a 10-over par 294 in round one, one shot back of UC Davis. Host school Pacific holds the tournament lead heading into day two, carding a 12-under par. Pacific's Patrick Kucich and Oregon State's Jonnie Motomochi share the lead individually, shooting 6-under par 65 on round one.

"Today was a great day to play, and unfortunately we didn't quite come up with a very good team score," said head coach Tim Norris. "Jason (Schulte) played awfully well and the other guys had their moments, but we did not finish very well. We made some errors and maybe some strategy decisions that I think the guys would probably like to have over."

Senior Jason Schulte is the top individual for the Wildcats, shooting an even-par 71 to finish day one in a tie for 19th. Sophomore Ben Juffer sits two shots back of Schulte in a tie for 30th at 2-over par 73.

Freshman Thomas Birdsey and sophomore Curtis Yonke will both look to improve upon their 4-over par 75 first rounds, putting them in a tie for 41st. Freshman Jack Watson trails them by one stroke at 5-over par 76 in a tie for 48th.

"There is plenty of golf left to have a respectable tournament," continued Norris. "I felt coming in that the team was on the upswing, and I still feel that, but today was a day to take advantage and we didn't quite do that. I am confident that the guys will step up these last few rounds and finish the tournament off in style."

Round two of the Pacific Invitational is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. (PT) Tuesday morning, while Wednesday's final round will also tee off at 8:00 a.m. Live scoring for the event can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
