STOCKTON, Calif. – Battling tricky wind conditions, the Kansas State men's golf team put together a gritty performance and recorded the lowest team score in the second round, jumping five spots to a tie for fourth on Tuesday in the Pacific Invitational at the par 71, 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club.

Three Wildcats bettered their first round scores as the team accumulated a 7-over par 291, two strokes better than any other team in the field. As a result, K-State cut its deficit in the team competition from 10 strokes to just five with 18 holes left to play as the Wildcats hold a 36-hole score of 10-over par 578.

“The wind blew about 20 miles per hour all day, and our guys are just comfortable in that element,” explained head coach Tim Norris. “I saw everybody playing in their comfort zone and without fear today. That is why we had a good round today. We are tracking in the right direction."

Curtis Yonke birdied his final two holes to close out a 1-over par 72 round to put him in a tie for 10th. Ben Juffer also fired off a 1-over par 72 to raise 21 spots in the individual standings to a tie for 17th.

Kyle Weldon shot a 2-over par 73 to ascend 15 spots in the standings into a five-way tie for 27th. Joining Weldon is Chase Chamberlin, who recorded a 7-over par 78 on the day. Kyle Smell also jumped eight spots thanks to his six-stroke improvement from the first round.

“Everybody has contributed in getting us into contention,” added Norris. “We have definitely had a step in the right direction these past two days, and hopefully we can finish it off tomorrow. The theme this week has been to just find a way, and we will look to do that again tomorrow. I am pleased with how we have been top to bottom.”

Colorado State overtook the team lead by compiling a 9-over par 293 score on the day and has a two-round total of 5-over par 573. Nevada’s Kevin Lucas captured the individual lead with an even-par 71 score subsequent to a 5-under par 66 on Monday.

The third and final round of the Pacific Invitational will begin at 8:00 a.m., on Wednesday with players teeing off holes No.1 and No. 10. Live stats will be available on www.golfstat.com, and results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play.
