Watkins Tees Up at PGA Tour's Waste Management Open

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Former Kansas State men's golfer Aaron Watkins will participate in the PGA Tour's Waste Management Phoenix Open, Thursday through Sunday, at the TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz.
 
Watkins claimed a spot in the event Monday by shooting a 66 (-6) at a qualifier at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was able to card eight birdies and two bogeys on the par 72 Palm Course. Watkins tied for first in the qualifier out of 111 players, sharing medalist honors with Troy Kelly.
 
Watkins, a K-State letterwinner from 2001-04, will tee off at 9:00 a.m. (MST), on Thursday and 1:10 p.m. (MST), on Friday. A veteran of the Nationwide Tour, Watkins played in 23 events during the 2011 season. He placed in the top 25 during nine events and climbed his way to the top 10 at two tournaments. Watkins was able to earn $130,950 during the year, bringing his career total to $263,969. His best finish in 2011 was sixth place at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open in June.
