Cats Head to California to Start Spring

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State men’s golf team will be putting its No. 57 ranking on the line as it travels to the state of California for the third time this season for a match against the University of California Riverside. The Wildcats had one of the best fall seasons in school history and look to ride that success into the spring season.

FALL SEASON RECAP:  Heading into the fall season, the Wildcats had won just one tournament since 2003, but that quickly changed when the Wildcats were able to win their first tournament of the season at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. The success didn’t stop there as the Wildcats were able to place in the top-five in the next four tournaments with three second-place finishes during that stretch.
“To be in contention every single tournament with a couple of wins was great. It was nice to start the season with a win here in Manhattan at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate,” said head coach Tim Norris.
But the Wildcats didn’t stop there. In their final tournament of the fall season the Wildcats had a chance to get some revenge as they traveled to Stockton, Calif., for the 2008 edition of the Pacific Invitational. With redemption in mind, the Wildcats were determined to put together one of their best performances of the fall season and came home with the championship trophy.
To say the Wildcats had a record setting fall is an understatement. The two victories this fall marked the first time the Wildcats have won more than one tournament in a season since the 2001-02 season.
The 2008-09 team is also the only team in school history to win two tournaments in the fall season.  The Wildcats are on pace to shatter the school’s annual stroke average of 287.17, seven strokes lower than the school record set by last season’s team. Their six top-five finishes put them in second place in school history with still half the season ahead of them.

HOST BIGHORN GOLF CLUB:  The University of California Riverside will host the match at The Bighorn Golf Club. According to Bighorn’s official website Bighorn Golf Club has played host to such events as The Skins Game, The Battle at Bighorn, Senior PGA Match Play, and the LPGA Samsung World Championship. Bighorns two awe inspiring courses are known by many but experienced by only the fortunate few.
