Wildcats Claim the Dual in the Desert Title

PALM DESERT, CALIF. The Kansas State men’s golf team started the spring season the way it finished the fall season as the Wildcats won their third tournament of the 2008-09 season after bringing home the crown from the Dual in the Desert. The team carded a 5-over par 293 at the prestigious Bighorn Golf Club to best the University of California Riverside.

“I thought the guys did really well today for never seeing this course before,” said head coach Tim Norris. “There were some blind holes and I thought the greens were U.S. Open speed so I was quite happy with the scores today. I thought we did a really nice job.”

Kansas State senior Robert Streb took home the individual title after he carded a 1-under par 71, placing him ahead of fellow Wildcat Joe Ida who carded a 1-over par 73.

“He played some really good golf here today,” said Norris about Streb’s performance. “I know that some of the par-5 holes were set up for some birdies and some of the holes he had an opportunity for eagle, so he really took advantage of the par-5’s. He did really well in practice, so coming here and seeing his performance was not a surprise.”

The Wildcats dominated the 18-hole event after Ida carded a 1-over par 73 to bring home the second place trophy, which is his third top-10 performance of the season. Sophomore Ross Geubelle placed a career best third with a 2-over par 73.

Mitchell Gregson finished the day with a 3-over 75 placing him in a three way tie for fourth place with fellow Wildcat Jason Schulte and U.C. Riverside golfer Andrew Cortez. Gregson, who won two tournaments during the fall season, has now finished 19 rounds with a score of 75 or lower this season.

Sophomore Kyle Smell rounded out the Wildcat lineup with a 16-over par 88. Smell has now played in 14 events since he became a Wildcat in 2007.
