K-State in 10th through 36 Holes in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team finished day one of the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic at 22-over par 598 and currently sits in 10th after 36-holes of play on Monday.

The Wildcats shot a 6-over par 294 in the first round, the first sub-300 team score since shooting a 287 during the second round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on October 10th. However, K-State fell during the second round, carding a 16-over par 304.

Head coach Tim Norris says he is happy with the improvement and looks for more of tomorrow, as the team is within 10 strokes of fourth place.

"I saw some progress today. It wasn't big, but it was still progress. Hopefully we can take some course knowledge that we gained today and use it tomorrow," Norris said.

San Diego State leads the field following a 12-under par 564 performance during day one. The Aztecs are five strokes ahead of UC Irvine at 7-under par 569.

Three individuals are tied for first, as San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg and Adam Porzak, as well as UC Irvine's Jay Choe all fired a 3-under par 141.

Junior Kyle Yonke led the Wildcats through day one as he shot a 1-over par 145. The Lubbock, Texas, native, recorded an even-par 72 in the first round, his best round since shooting 70 during the second round of the Alister MacKenzie. Yonke will begin final-round play tomorrow tied for 13th.

"Kyle played very well," Norris said. "Hopefully he can have a strong finish tomorrow."

Sophomore Joe Kinney pitched in two counting rounds of 1-over par 73 and 4-over par 76. He is in a seven-way tie for 26th at 5-over par 149.

Freshman Joe Ida was 1-over 73 during the first round, but slipped during the second as he shot a 79. He currently sits tied for 44th.
