Wildcats Tie for Third at Ron Moore Invitational

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Kansas State men's golf team held steady during the final round to finish tied for third at the Ron Moore Invitational Tuesday. The Wildcats carded a final-round score of 4-under par 284, finishing the event with a season-low 14-under par 850 on the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Club. Wichita State, who led after day one, took home the team title after firing a 33-under par 831, 17 strokes ahead of second-place team Nebraska.

The 54-hole score of 850 by the Wildcats was 21 strokes better than their previous season-best of 871 at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in school history. The third-place tie was the team's highest finish since a second-place tie at the season-opening Central Region Preview.

Head coach Tim Norris was impressed with the low scores, but realizes his team still has work to do.

"The scores are a lot better, but this course gave up a lot of low scores," Norris said. "We have come a good distance, but we still have lots of work left. This was a continuation of what happened in Fresno last week and it gave us a little more confidence heading into the final stretch of the season."

Boise State's Troy Merritt, who led after 36 holes, took home individual honors with a three-round score of 13-under par 203. Denver's Jeff Koprivetz and Wichita State's Cameron Bishop tied for second at 11-under par 205.

Kansas State was led by four individuals who all recorded career-low 54-hole scores as Robert Streb, Kyle Yonke, Mitchell Gregson and Joe Kinney all finished under par. Streb led all Wildcats as he fired a 5-under par 211 (69-70-72) to tie for 12th. His previous career-low was 214 at the 2006 ASU Thunderbird Invitational.

Yonke and Gregson were one stroke back of Streb, tying for 15th at 4-under par 212. Yonke was able to break 215 after hitting that mark on two different occasions, the last coming a week ago at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic. Gregson's previous low score was 218 at the Central Region Preview.

Kinney, who has been a regular in the lineup the past five events, carded a 1-under par 215 (70-72-73) to tie for 23rd. It was a career-best finish in a three-round tournament, besting his tie for 25th at the 2006 Wexford Intercollegiate.

K-State led all teams in par 3 scoring with an average of 3.17 (+10) and finished second in par 4 scoring at 4.05 (+7).

Next action for the Wildcats will be an in-state event for the first time since the fall of 2004 as the Wildcats participate in the Shocker Classic, April 2-3, in Wichita, Kan.
