Cats Finish Fifth at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Kansas State senior Robert Streb carded his lowest three-round score of the season with a 13-under par 203 as he led the Wildcats to a fifth-place finish at the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Course.

Streb finished the tournament in fourth place, his fifth top-five finish of the season.

"Robert was really solid again today," said head coach Tim Norris. "He is just playing some great golf, which is a tribute to all the hard work and focus he has put in this year."

The Wildcats carded a 19-under par 845 to record their eighth top-five finish of the season, tying the 2007-08 team for the most top-five finishes in a season. Host team Denver finished first and was atop the leader board all three rounds. The Pioneers were led in the final round by senior Jeff Koprivetz, who carded a 2-under par 70 and finished tied for sixth. Finishing second was Tulsa with a three-round score of 34-under par 830. Coastal Carolina finished third with a combined score of 26-under par 838.

"We had a little higher score than we wanted, but we did have some low scores today from some guys," said Norris. "We had the fourth best round of the day and had some really good individual scores."

Air Force's Tom Whitney won the individual crown with a three-day total of 16-under par 200, one stroke ahead of Coastal Carolina's Zach Byrd and Tulsa's Nick Geyger, who both finished with a 15-under par 201.

Junior Joe Ida carded a 1-over par 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 16th place. Mitchell Gregson finished in a tie for 37th with an even par 216.

Wildcat Daniel Wood, who competed as an individual, finished the day with a 2-over par 218 and in a tie for 46th place. Ross Geubelle finished the day in a tie for 51st place with a 3-over par 219. Kyle Smell tied for 61st place with a 7-over par 223.
