Wildcats to Tee It Up at The Wyoming Cowboy Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan.-  After returning from its trip to Laredo, Texas, the Kansas State men’s golf team will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the ninth annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon, on Monday and Tuesday April 4 and 5. The Wildcats are coming off a 14th place finish in the Border Olympics. The Cowboy Classic, which will score the top four individuals, will tee off on Monday, April 4 at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start for the first two rounds, while Tuesday’s final round will tee-off from No. 1 and No. 10 at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring for the event will be available on golfstat.com.

THE LINEUP: The Wildcats will be led into action by a pair of freshmen in Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson. They will be joined by sophomores Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke as well as junior Kyle Smell to round out the scoring lineup. Birdsey and Yonke were the top two performers for the Cats the last time out. This will be the second straight event that this lineup has been used.

LOOK AT THE FIELD: The 20 team field includes No. 22 San Diego, Air Force, Arizona, Baylor, Colorado, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Kansas, Kansas State, Nevada, Oregon State, Santa Clara, San Francisco, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, Utah, Utah State, Wichita State and Wyoming.

FRESHMAN SUCCESS: The Wildcat men’s golf team continues to find success from their outstanding freshman class. Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson have been a part of every scoring lineup this season and have combined for three top-five and five top-10 finishes. Birdsey leads the Wildcats with a stroke average of 73.21, while Watson has an average of 74.71. Watson and Birdsey finished second and third respectively, at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate during the fall, and Birdsey finished in first at the La Cantera Tri-Match this spring. Birdsey will look to improve upon his last outing as he lead K-State at the Border Olympics, carding a 1-over par 217 and tying for 35th.

WYOMING COWBOY CLASSIC: This will be the first time the K-State men’s golf team has ever competed in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. Cal State Northridge took home the team title at last years Cowboy Classic as it carded a 1-over par 841. San Diego’s Gunner Wiebe  took home the individual title as he carded a 7-under par 203.

LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats finished in 14th at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, at the Laredo Country Club. Freshman Thomas Birdsey was the top performer for the Wildcats, carding a 1-over 217 to put him in a tie for 35th.
