Two Wildcats Tied for First After 36 Holes in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. - Sophomore Robert Streb and freshman Mitchell Gregson paved the way for the Kansas State men's golf team on day one of the Shocker Classic. The Wildcats carded a 36-hole score of 19-over par 587 (294-293) on the par 71, 6,814-yard Wichita Country Club, and will start final-round play in second, eight strokes behind day-one leader Texas-Arlington. The Mavs finished the day at 11-over par 579.

K-State ended round one in sixth, but shot consistent as others didn't during a breezy second round. Head coach Tim Norris was pleased with where he team sits and hopes for more windy conditions during Tuesday's final round.

"Everybody contributed and stayed patient during some brutal holes," Norris said. "It was breezy, just like it is at Colbert Hills, and that's a good thing because we are used to playing in those conditions. I told them in practice that if we keep it around par, we are going to be sitting pretty good."

K-State currently sits ahead of all five Central Region opponents, including host school Wichita State, who is ranked No. 5 in the Central Region according to Golfweek. The Shockers ended the first day of the event in fifth at 27-over par 595.

Streb and Gregson led the Wildcats by carding 36-hole scores of 2-over par 144 and sit in a six-way tie for first heading into the final round. Both will be looking to become the first Wildcat individuals to win a tournament since Ben Kern won the ASU Thunderbird Invitational last year. Gregson tied his lowest 36-hole score of 144 for the second-consecutive tournament.

Junior Kyle Yonke sits in the top 20 heading into the third round as he is tied for 19th at 6-over par 148. Three strokes behind him is freshman Joe Ida, who finished day one at 9-over par 151. He will begin final-round play tied for 33rd.

Spencer Alefs, playing as an individual, returned to his hometown of Wichita. The Wichita Southeast graduate concluded day one tied for 39th at 11-over par 153.

Kansas State will conclude the Shocker Classic with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start to the final round. Results will be posted on at the conclusion of the event.
