Wildcats in 11th After Day One in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. The Kansas State men’s golf team concluded day one of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Friday carding a 1-over par 289 to place 11th after the first frame. Low scores were abundant on the par 72, 7,057-yard ASU Karsten Course, as the average player score was 72.49. Oregon and Southern California are tied for the lead as both squads fired a 10-under par 278.

“It’s a very competitive field,” said head coach Tim Norris. “We just needed a couple more shots here and there, but it was a solid start and, overall, you can’t be disappointed.”

Individually, New Mexico’s Charlie Beljan and Oregon’s Derek Sipe lead the field as both posted rounds of 6-under par 66.

Sophomore Robert Streb led the way for K-State as he carded a score of 2-under par 70. It was his fourth round under par this season, including three in the last three events. Streb will begin second-round play in an 11-way tie for 11th.

“Obviously, having course knowledge from last year is not a bad thing,” Norris said. “If Robert had made a few more putts, then he would be near the top of the leaderboard.”

A trio of Wildcats Kyle Yonke, Mitchell Gregson, and Joe Ida are currently tied for 44th at 1-over par 73. Yonke, who started play on No. 10, shot 3-over par on the back nine, including a double bogey on No. 15. However, the senior settled down after the turn, carding birdies on three of the first five holes on the front.

Joe Kinney ended first-round play tied for 66th at 3-over par 75.

Kansas State will continue the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday with an 8:47 a.m. (PT) tee time from No. 10. Live results are available via www.golfstat.com. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they are made available.
