Wildcats Capture Tiger Intercollegiate Title

COLUMBIA, Mo. The Kansas State men’s golf team fired a 10-over par 874 at the Tiger Intercollegiate to take home the championship at the par 72, 7221-yard Club at Old Hawthorne. With the win the Wildcats became the first Kansas State team in 23 years to win four tournaments in a single season.

“We have had a lot of depth this year. We have excellent competition when we are practicing in Manhattan. When we go on the road we are pre-tested and focused,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I told these guys that this year could be something special if they go out there and play, practice hard and focus. They have done an excellent job of that and I like to hope that our best golf is still ahead of us.”

The Wildcats started the final round six strokes ahead of UT-Arlington and were able to hold off a late surge by the Mavericks who finished two strokes behind the Wildcats in a tie for second place with The University of New Orleans. Southern Methodist started the day in third place but finished one spot back in fourth place.

“The conditions were tough again when we teed off this morning,” Norris said. “The hole locations were a lot more challenging today so the scores where a little higher. Our guys did a great job today of toughing it out. A great team wins ugly and today was an ugly one.”

Junior Mitchell Gregson finished in a tie for third place for the second straight week after shooting a 2-under par 214. With the third place finish Gregson now has six top-5 finishes in 10 tournaments this season.

”He is just a solid player,” said Norris of Gregson’s performance. “When he plays well you know that he is going to be somewhere near the top no matter what the course or weather is like.”

Sophomore Kyle Smell started the day in a tie forseventh place but jumped up one spot to finish in a career best tie for sixth place after carding a 1-over par 217. Smell tied with New Orleans sophomore Ken Looper.

Joe Ida finished in a tie for 12th place with Kevin Carrigan of UT Arlington after posting a 5-over par 221. This is the eighth top-20 finish of the season for Ida. Sophomore Daniel Wood finished in a six-way tie for 17th place after shooting an 8-over par 228. The 17th place finish is Wood’s third top-20 finish of the season.

Playing as an individual, Joe Kinney placed in a four-way tie for 32nd place after carding an 11-over par 227. Senior Robert Streb moved up one spot from Monday’s round to finish in a five-way tie for 42nd place after firing a 15-over par 231.

The Wildcats tee it up next at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., for the Big 12 Championship Monday, April 27.
