Wildcats Travel to Iowa City for Hawkeye Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Gearing up for the Big 12 Championships, the Kansas State men's golf team will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in its last regular season event of the 2010-2011 campaign at the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17, at the Finkbine Golf Course. The Wildcats are coming off a 14th place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The Hawkeye Invitational will tee off on Saturday, April 16, at 9:00 a.m., with a shotgun start for the first two rounds, while Sunday's final round will tee off at 9:00 a.m with a shotgun start.

THE LINEUP: Continuing with the same lineup as seen in the last two events, the Wildcats will be led into action by a pair of freshmen in Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson. They will be joined by sophomores Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke as well as junior Kyle Smell to round out the scoring lineup. Birdsey and Yonke were the top two performers for the Cats the last time out.

LOOK AT THE FIELD: The 11 team field includes No. 14 Iowa, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Miami (Ohio), Missouri, Nebraska, UNC Charlotte, North Texas and Wichita State.

GEARING UP FOR BIG 12'S: This will be the last regular season event for the Wildcat men's golf team before they head to the Big 12 Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., April 25-27. Having used the same lineup in the last three events, including the Hawkeye Invitational, the Wildcats have shot a team average 290.66 per round. K-State will look to improve upon its finish at the Cowboy Classic as four of the five golfers carded an even-par 70 during the last round in Scottsdale, Ariz.

HAWKEYE INVITATIONAL: This will be the first time the K-State men's golf team has competed in the Hawkeye Invitational. The Iowa Hawkeyes took home the team title at the 2010 Hawkeye Invitational as they carded a one-under par 863. The 7,180-yard, par-72 Finkbine Golf Course has been the site for the Amana VIP Pro-Am, Ben Hogan Tour - Hawkeye Open and was the site for the 1992 and 2002 men's Big Ten Championships.

LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats finished in 14th at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Talking Stick Golf Course. Freshman Thomas Birdsey was the top performer for the Wildcats, carding a 4-over 214 to put him in a tie for 28th. Overall K-State saw success in the final round of the Cowboy Classic as the team shot the lowest combined team round of the season. The Wildcats carded an even-par 280 as four individuals shot an even-par 70 during that round.
