Four Wildcats Named to Academic All-Big 12 Teams

IRVING, Texas - Senior Jay Kramer, junior Kyle Yonke, and sophomores Joe Kinney and Robert Streb were among 34 student-athletes named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 golf teams, conference officials announced Tuesday.

Kansas State tied with Nebraska for third, as both schools had four academic all-conference selections. Missouri placed a league-high six student-athletes on the squad, followed by Oklahoma State with five.

Kramer, a political science major from Lenexa, Kan., was one of 30 individuals named to the first team. The senior has competed in two tournaments this year, compiling a 79.00 stroke average.

Yonke, a native of Lubbock, Texas, made his second-consecutive appearance on the conference's academic first team. The marketing major has seen action in all 12 tournaments this year and owns a stroke average of 75.12. His best finish this season came at the Fresno State Golf Classic when he tied for eighth at 1-under par 215.

Since first-year students are not eligible for all-league academic honors, both Kinney and Streb are making appearances on the team during their first-eligible years. Kinney, a business administration major, was a second-team selection. The sophomore has become a vital part of the Wildcats' lineup down the stretch of the season, competing in all seven events during the spring. He recorded a career 54-hole low score of 1-under par 215 at the Ron Moore Invitational.

Another business administration major, Streb, was also named to the second team. He has competed in 11 events this year and leads the team in stroke average at 74.97. The Edmond, Okla., native, tied a career-best finish when he tied for second at the Shocker Classic.

In his 10th year at Kansas State, head coach Tim Norris has placed 23 student-athletes on the academic all-league list, including 18 on the first team. The Wildcats have produced at least two al- academic student-athletes every year since the 1999-2000 season.

Student-athletes named to the first team must maintain a 3.20 or better GPA - either cumulative or over the two previous semesters -  and must have participated in 60-percent his team's scheduled events. Second team members must maintain a 3.00 GPA and also meet the same requirements. Freshmen and transfer students are not eligible, but senior student-athletes who have participated in a minimum of two years and meet the GPA requirements are eligible.

The Kansas State men's golf team will compete in the 2007 Big 12 Championships, April 23-24, at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
