Wildcats Tied for Seventh At Big 12 Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. The Kansas State men’s golf team finished day one of the 2007 Big 12 Championship tied for seventh and has two individuals in the top 20 heading into Tuesday’s final round at the par 70, 6,611-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Wildcats carded a 36-hole score of 45-over par 605 and are tied with Baylor heading into final-round play. Oklahoma State leads the field with a two-round score of 19-over par 579, five strokes ahead of second-place Texas A&M.

“The difference between having a good shot and a great shot is not much,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Everyone had miscues but held it together throughout the whole day. We would love to be able to play tomorrow to improve our position.”

Individually, Texas Tech’s Oscar Floren carded a 1-over par 141 and holds just a one-stroke lead over Texas A&M’s Robert Gates heading into final-round play tomorrow.

The Wildcats were paced on Monday by two individuals placing in the top 20. Freshman Joe Ida shot an 8-over par 148 to sit in a 12th-place tie with Baylor’s Bill Allcorn. Sophomore Joe Kinney is tied for 14th place after a 9-over par round of 149. Kinney will be eyeing his first career top-20 finish Tuesday. His previous best finish in a 54-hole tournament is a 23rd-place tie at the Ron Moore Invitational.

Freshman Mitchell Gregson finished the day tied for 36th place after carding a 14-over par 154.

Robert Streb and Kyle Yonke are both tied for 43rd after identical first- and second-round scores of 77-78. They will start day two at 15-over par 155.

Kansas State will conclude the 2007 Big 12 Championship with an 8:00 a.m. tee time from hole No. 10. The threat of inclement weather is in the forecast for the Hutchinson area on Tuesday. If final-round play is canceled, then 36-hole scores will be used to determine the final results. Live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
