Wildcats Ready to Tee Off at Big 12 Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a seventh place finish at last week’s Hawkeye Taylor-Made Invitational, Kansas State is set to compete in the 2011 Big 12 Championship, Monday through Wednesday, April 25-27, at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Last season, the Wildcats placed fifth at the Big 12’s and look to regain their place within the top-five. The 72-hole championship will tee off on Monday from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 8:00 a.m., for the first two rounds of play. Tuesday’s and Wednesday's 18-hole rounds will have scheduled tee times at 8:00 and 8:50 a.m., with pairings based on the results of the previous day's action. An awards ceremony will take place following the final round on Wednesday. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.

THE LINEUP: Continuing with the same lineup it had seen in the last three events, K-State will be led into action by a pair of freshmen in Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson. They will be joined by sophomores Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke, as well as junior Kyle Smell. Watson and Yonke were the top two performers for the Cats the last time out as they both finished in the top-20.

LOOK AT THE FIELD:  Seedings for the 2011 Big 12 Championship are: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Texas A&M, No.3 Texas, No. 4 Texas Tech, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 6 Baylor, No. 7 Missouri, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 9 Colorado, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 11 Kansas and No. 12 Kansas State.

2011 BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP: Oklahoma State seeks its fifth-straight team title at this year’s Big 12 Championship. The Cowboys won their fourth-straight title at the 2010 championship when they carded a 19-under par 1133, 13 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Texas A&M. Their 13-stroke victory was the third-largest margin of victory at the Big 12’s. With their team score of 1133 and 19-under, Oklahoma State set the Big 12 record for lowest 72-hole score. Individually, Texas Tech’s Chris Ward finished his Big 12 career by taking home the individual title by carding a 9-under par 279, just two strokes ahead of Oklahoma State’s Peter Uihlein. K-State finished in fifth place at last year’s Big 12 Championship as it carded an 11-over par 1163. Joe Ida led the Wildcats, finishing in a tie for seventh place at even-par 288.

LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats finished the Hawkeye Taylor-Made Invitational in seventh place after carded a 35-over 611. Sophomore Curtis Yonke was the top overall performer for Kansas State as he carded a 4-over par 148 en route to a top-10 finish. Yonke shot a 4-over par 76 during Saturday’s first round and an even-par 72 during Sunday’s final round, including three birdies.
