Streb in Seventh after Day One at Big 12 Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - With temperatures in the 40's and winds gusting over 30 mph, weather was the big story of the first day of the 2009 Big-12 Championships at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson. Even with the first round delayed over an hour due to heavy rains, senior Robert Streb was able to fire a 4-over par 144 to put him in seventh place heading into Tuesday's third round.

"He is in pretty good shape," said head coach Tim Norris on Streb's performance. "Par is such a good score here because there are just no easy holes. There is just not much margin for error out here."

The Wildcats were able to withstand the weather to card a 45-over par 605 at the par 70, 6701 yard Prairie Dunes Country Club. With their score the Wildcats are in seventh place, three strokes ahead of 20th ranked Texas. Defending Big 12 Champion Oklahoma State is tied for the lead with University of Colorado after they both carded a 21-over par 581.

"It was a pretty good team effort today," said Norris. "We had a pretty dysfunctional practice round yesterday because we only got to see about 12 holes. I think these guys know that they haven't played their best golf yet this tournament but the good part is that there are 36-holes left."

Bill Allcorn of Baylor and Derek Tolan of Colorado are tied for the lead following the first day after they both carded a 1-under par 139.

For the Wildcats, sophomore Daniel Wood and junior Joe Ida are tied for 35th place after shooting a 15-over par 155.

Sophomore Kyle Smell was able to knock 10 strokes off his second round score finishing with a 3-over par 73 second round score after carding a 13-over par 83 in the first round. The two-round score of 16-over par 156 places Smell in a tie for 40th place heading into the third round.

Mitchell Gregson finished one stroke behind Smell in a tie for 45th place after firing a 17-over par 157.

The Big 12 Championship continues Tuesday, April 28, with an 18-hole third round starting at 8:00 A.M. (CST). For live scoring log on to golfstat.com.
