Wildcats Struggle in First Round

DALY CITY, Calif. - The Kansas State men's golf team sits in 11th place after day one of the NCAA West Regional. The Wildcats carded a 6-over par 294 at the 6,842-yard Lake Merced Golf Club. The Wildcats were led by junior Mitchell Gregson who carded a team best 1-under par 71.

"Today we were just lacking one more low score," said head coach Tim Norris. "It seems like most teams had at least one player in the 60's. There is a lot of golf left to be played and obviously we would like to be up closer to that fifth spot, but we have a chance tomorrow. This is a second shot golf course that makes you be precise with the irons and our irons were off by just a little bit. "

Arizona State, the regional's No. 3 seed, registered a 9-under par total of 279 and holds a one-shot advantage over New Mexico, which finished the round with an 8-under par 280. Texas A&M is third place after carding a 7-under par 281. Oregon is in fourth place with a 6-under par 282 and top-seed USC rounds out the top five with a 3-under par 285.

USC sophomore Matthew Giles holds the individual lead after carding a 7-under par 65, one shot off the course record. In second place is Arizona State sophomore Jesper Kennegard carded an opening-round 6-under par 66.

Gregson is in a tie for 13th place after firing a 1-under par 71.

"It doesn't matter where you take Mitch, he is going to play hard," said Norris about Gregson's performance. "He had his moments today both good and bad but was able to recover and make a good birdie on the last hole."

Junior Joe Ida carded a 1-over par 73 and is in a tie for 37th place after the first round. Finishing two strokes behind Ida are sophomore Kyle Smell and senior Robert Streb, who each finished at 3-over par 75.

Rounding out the Wildcat lineup was sophomore Daniel Wood, who shot a 5-over par 77 and is in a tie for 67th place heading into round two.

The Wildcats tee off the second round of the NCAA West Regional on Friday, at 11:20 (CST), and can be followed on golfstat.com.
