Wildcats Finding Success in Summer Events

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Led by Kansas State women's golfer Carly Ragains, Wildcat golfers have already made a splash in various summer events.

Ragains, a senior for the 2014-15 season, qualified for the USGA Women's Amateur Public Links Championship by carding a 3-over par 75 to place fourth at a qualifier at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois, on Wednesday. She nabbed the final qualifying spot, edging a duo of golfers at 4-over par 76, as she became the first Wildcat to advance to the event since Gianna Misenhelter in 2012.

Ragains will be in the field of 156 for the event, July 14-19, at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington. The event consists of two rounds of stroke play, July 14 and 15, before the field is cut to 64 competitors for six rounds of match play.

Several current and former men's golfers will compete in the 2014 Watson Challenge, June 13-15, at the Country Club of Loch Lloyd in Kansas City. Junior-to-be Matt Green tied for first at a qualifying event held at Fred Arbanas Golf Course on Wednesday by carding a 5-under par 67. Also tying for first was former Wildcat Curtis Yonke, while redshirt freshman JP Derksen will be the first alternate for the event by tying for fifth at 4-under par 68.

Former K-State golfer Joe Ida earned a special invitation by winning the 2012 Watson Challenge, while current PGA Tour member Robert Streb, who is 74th in the FedEx Cup rankings, also received a special invitation.
