Wildcats Prepare for US Open Sectionals

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Three former Kansas State golfers and an incoming freshman have advanced to 2010 US Open sectional qualifying, beginning Monday, June 7, at various sites throughout the nation.

Each 36-hole sectional offers the players an opportunity to qualify as a part of the field at the 2010 US Open, which will be held June 17-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Former all-American AJ Elgert shot a 70 to win a spot in a playoff at the Lionsgate GC in Overland Park, Kan., and advance to sectionals. He will play his sectional at the Nicklaus Course at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.

Robert Streb, another former all-American, tied for medalist honors at the Oklahoma City Golf and CC local qualifying site after carding a 67. Streb will play his sectional in Memphis, Tenn., at Germantown and Ridgeway Country Clubs.

Ben Kern shot a 67 to place second in his local qualifier at the Southern Dunes GC in Maricopa, Ariz. He will play in the Columbus, Ohio, sectionals at Brookside CC and The Lakes Golf and CC.

Incoming freshman Jack Watson of Lincolnshire, Ill., won a spot in a playoff after shooting a 73 at the Hawthorn Woods Country Club in the Chicago area. Watson will compete in sectionals at the Bull Valley Country Club in Woodstock, Ill.
