Yonke Wins Kansas City Amateur

MANHATTAN, Kan. Former Kansas State men’s golfer Kyle Yonke, who just completed his eligibility this past season, won the open division of the 2008 Kansas City Amateur on Monday at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.

Yonke carded sub-par rounds of 4-under 68 on Saturday and 5-under 67 on Sunday. However, Yonke had to battle difficult course conditions and a charge by Prairie Village native Doug Albers to win the tournament in dramatic fashion, defeating Albers by one stroke with a three-round total of 6-under 210 following a 3-over 75 during Monday’s final round.

Sophomore-to-be Jason Schulte, a Mission Hills product, tied for sixth at 2-over 218 (73-73-72), while another sophomore, Overland Park native Kyle Smell, tied for 19th at 9-over 225 (75-74-76).

Yonke, Schule and Smell, along with five other current Wildcats and one incoming freshman will participate in the Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship, July 15-20, at Wichita Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
