MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior men’s golfer Kyle Smell fell in a 36-hole final match of the 101st Kansas Amateur Sunday at Hallbrook Country Club in Leawood, Kan.

The Overland Park, Kan., native was the top seed in the match-play field of 64 competitors and advanced to the finals after winning five matches, including two on both Friday and Saturday.

Smell took on third-seeded Hunter Sparks in the final round and was 1 Up through 24 holes. Sparks came back to win holes No. 29 and 30 to take a one-hole lead, but Smell quickly birdied the 31st hole to even the match. With five holes left, the two players halved No. 32 and 33 before Sparks won the 34th and 35th holes to win, 2&1.

Smell and sophomore Tyler Norris will compete in a U.S. Amateur qualifier Tuesday at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
