MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State men’s golfer Joe Kinney captured his first professional victory in dramatic fashion as he outlasted Dustin Korte and Carlos Sainz Jr., 12-14-17, in a three-hole playoff at 64th Illinois Open championship.

“The Illinois Open means the world to me,” said Kinney during the trophy presentation. “I mark it on my calendar as ‘do not miss’. This is a first-class golf tournament and as good as it gets.”

A 2010 graduate of K-State and native of Antioch, Ill., Kinney opened up the 2013 Illinois Open with a scorching first-round 65, but followed that up with a 4-over 76 in the second round. Kinney was able to regain control as he turned in a third-round 2-under 70 and closed out the final round atop the leaderboard at 5-under 211.

While Kinney waited in the clubhouse, Korte and Sainz Jr., each sank birdie putts on holes 17 and 18, respectively, to force a playoff. Kinney was able to best both golfers in the extra rounds as he recorded a three-hole aggregate score of 12, besting Korte by two strokes and Sainz, Jr., by five strokes.
