Pair of Wildcats Open Play at U.S. Amateur Monday

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State men’s golfer Kyle Weldon and former Wildcat Kyle Smell will begin action in the 2012 U.S. Amateur on Monday at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

Weldon, a sophomore for the 2012-13 season, will tee off at 10 a.m. (CT), from hole No. 10 at Cherry Hills. A product of Des Peres, Mo., Weldon advanced to his first U.S. Amateur by winning the St. Louis Qualifier at Gateway National Golf Links with a 2-under par 140, three shots better than a duo that tied for second place.

As a freshman, Weldon finished second on the team with a 74.14 stroke average and placed in the top 20 on five occasions, including a season-best fifth-place showing at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational last September.

A native of Overland Park, Kan., Smell also qualified for his first U.S. Amateur and will open play at 3:15 p.m. (CT), on Monday. The former Wildcat qualified for the event by winning the Wichita Qualifier with a 36-hole score of 4-over par 146. Smell completed his Wildcat career last season by finishing fourth on the squad with a 74.24 stroke average and a pair of top-10 finishes.

Kansas State opens the 2012-13 season with a trip to Wichita, Kan., for the Shocker Classic, September 10-11, at Wichita Country Club. The Wildcats will host the annual Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, October 1 and 2, at Colbert Hills. The event is free and open to the public.
