K-State's Watkins Falls In Round Of 32 At U.S. Amateur

Aaron Watkins dropped his second round match at the U.S. Amateur Thursday 4 and 2.

Aug. 22, 2002

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Aaron Watkins' run at the 2002 U.S. Amateur came to an end Thursday as the K-State junior-to-be dropped a 4-and-2 decision to Conner Robbins of Washington on the famed South Course at the Oakland Hills Country Club.

Watkins, who had been amazingly consistent throughout the event, struggled to maintain his hot play. After taking a double bogey on the opening hole, Watkins had to settle for bogeys on 4, 6 and 8 and was 2 down at the turn.

Though his play improved on the back nine, Watkins was never able to pull within striking distance as Robbins used birdies on 10 and 12 to go up by four holes and put the match on ice.
